Overview:

What is Genomics: Genomics is the study of all the genes of a cell, or tissue at the DNA (genotype), mRNA (transcriptome), or protein (proteome) levels.

Why is Genomics of interest to EPA? While genomics is still in the early stages of development and genomics results are not yet used in risk assessment or regulation development, microarray techniques have shown promise in ecological tests (relating frog gene expression to chemical stressors for example). Methodologies are expected to relate how environmental stressors affect cellular/tissue functions and how changes in gene expression may relate to adverse effects. Ultimately, genomics is expected to be able to relate stressors to human gene expression, and provide quantitative inputs for risk assessment.
