Application
EPA's demonstration projects have helped bring the following optimization-related technologies and approaches to the forefront. The associated reports can be helpful references when considering application of one or more of these technologies to new sites.
Remediation System Evaluation (RSE) Process - In addition to conducting optimization reviews (also known as Remediation System Evaluations or RSEs) at Superfund-financed sites, EPA has conducted evaluations at Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and Leaking Underground Storage Tank sites. RSE reports and summary lessons learned reports from over 40 projects are accessible from this section. (What is a Remediation System Evaluation (RSE)?)
Simulation/Modeling - Demonstration of one of these optimization technologies was EPA's first formal optimization effort. The technologies include using optimization software in conjunction with groundwater flow and contaminant transport models to optimize a remedy.
Long-Term Monitoring - These efforts range from demonstrating geostatistical software for optimizing long-term monitoring programs to reviewing emerging sensor technologies to facilitate groundwater monitoring. These efforts are described on this web site, and the associated documents are available for download.
