Additional Resources Links EPA Remedy Optimization Resources Optimization reviews are performed to improve the performance and/or reduce the annual operating cost of ground water remediation systems. Optimization reviews should be performed by an independent team of experts, in consultation with the site manager and operator. Recommendations can address the extraction well network, the treatment system, or the monitoring strategy. Optimization studies can be initiated by EPA at Fund-financed sites, or by States, Potentially Responsible Parties, or other Federal agencies for sites under their lead. Recommendations should be reviewed and approved by EPA, in coordination with the State. Optimization reviews should be considered prior to transferring ground water remediation systems to the States for O&M. Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable The mission of the Roundtable is to exchange information and provide a forum for joint activity regarding the development and demonstration of innovative technologies for hazardous waste site remediation. The exchange synthesizes the technical knowledge that Federal Agenices have compiled and provides a more comprehensive record of performance and cost. Members include major developers and users of these technologies: Department of Defense: U.S. Army, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Department of Energy, Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Interstate Technology Regulatory Council (ITRC) ITRC is a state-led coalition working together with industry and stakeholders to achieve regulatory acceptance of environmental technologies.

Past Conference on Accelerating Site Closeout, Improving Performance, and Reducing Costs Through Optimization, June 15-17, 2004, Dallas, TX This two and a half day conference sponsored by the Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable included evening workshops, a poster session, and three multi-day tracks titled, "Remediation Process Optimization", "Site Characterization, Long Term Monitoring, and Data Management Optimization", and "Strategic Considerations for Site Closeout". Evening workshops included topics such as "ITRC Presents: Essentials of Remediation Process Optimization" and "The Triad Approach to Managing Decision Uncertainty for Better Cleanup Projects". Subsurface Remediation: Improving Long-Term Monitoring & Remedial Systems Performance, June 8-11, 1999, St. Louis, MO As part of the Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable, U.S. EPA and the U.S. Departments of Defense, Energy, and the Interior hosted this conference to highlight successes and issues related to improving the performance of subsurface remediation technologies, to showcase practical approaches to cost-effective monitoring, and to identify research gaps and needs.
