Reflection is the return or rebound of particles or energy from the interface
between two media, such as the boundary between two rock layers. Refraction
is the change in direction of a particle or wave as it enters a medium
with different physical properties. If a wave is critically refracted,
it is bent enough to travel along the interface. The following diagram
illustrates these relationships.
