Mr. Ells is the Leader of the Sediments Team in EPA's Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation. He has been at EPA for 35 years, spending the last 29 in the Superfund program. Steve is a recognized expert in contaminated sediments, ecological risk assessment, and remedy selection. He champions the use of risk-based decision-making and was lead author of the Principles for Managing Contaminated Sediment Risks at Hazardous Waste Sites and led the development of Contaminated Sediment Remediation Guidance for Hazardous Waste Sites. Steve is the chair of the Contaminated Sediments Technical Advisory Group (CSTAG) which is evaluating the site investigations and remedy selection process at 17 of the most complex Superfund sediment sites.
Steve received his B.S. in Biology from Villanova University and his M.S. in Fisheries Biology from the University of Connecticut.
