Project Information
Project Name:   Bioremediation Using Controlled Release Oxygen Compounds at a Re-Fueling Station in Illinois
Project Status:   Complete
Contaminants Treated:
Chemical Name Conc. Units Comment
Benzene-toluene-ethylbenzene-xylene (BTEX) 24,122 µg/L
Media Treated:
Media Quantity Units Basis for Quantity
Ground Water
Demonstration Technologies and Types:   Reductive Dechlorination (In Situ Bioremediation) (In Situ Biological)
Enhanced Bioremediation (In Situ) (In Situ Biological)
Comments for Media:   Leaking underground storage tanks created a contaminant plume extending 390 feet downgradient from the source area with total BTEX in groundwater reaching 24,122 µg/L.
Demonstration Year:   2007
Year of Publication:   2007
Goal of the Demonstration:   The pilot study was conducted to evaluate enhanced in situ bioremediation using Oxygen Release Compound (ORC) to reduce BTEX concentrations in the groundwater immediately downgradient of the source area.
Design and Operations:   Leaking underground storage tanks at a re-fueling station produced a large BTEX plume in the underlying geology. In an effort to remove the source, the initial excavation removed 795 cubic yards of contaminated soil. Monitoring indicated that an effective remediation plan was needed for groundwater, however. A pilot test using enhanced in situ bioremediation was performed at the upper part of the plume using a barrier injection of 300 pounds of ORC to reduce BTEX concentrations immediately downgradient of the source area.
Performance Data Relevant to Demonstration Goals:   Results indicated BTEX reductions in pilot test wells MW-4 and MW-14 of 91 percent and 79 percent, respectively.
Interesting Aspects or Significance of the Demonstration:   Unusual or Novel Aspects of Technology Design
Other Comments about the Demonstration:   A full-scale remediation was conducted at the site after the pilot study was successful.
