POCIS - Current Applications, On-going Research and Future Needs
The polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS) has recently seen a dramatic increase in its use for monitoring for pharmaceuticals, polar pesticides, and wastewater-related chemicals. However, there are many fundamental research issues that need to be addressed before it can reach the level of data quality and acceptance that the semipermeable membrane device (SPMD) has. This presentation will include a discussion of: 1) state of the technology and what type of data that can be expected, 2) recent laboratory and field studies, 3) on-going calibration studies to determine sampling rates and uptake kinetics, 4) status of the performance reference compound (PRC) approach, 5) combination of POCIS with bioindicator/toxicity testing, and 6) future needs from the reseach community.
