Guidance on Innovative Technology Risk Sharing (OSWER Directive #9010.02). This guidance was issued on March 24, 1998 jointly by the Office of Emergency and Remedial Response, the Office of Site Remediation Enforcement, and the Technology Innovation Office. It outlines EPA's program to share the risk of using selected innovative technologies. As a form of underwriting, this initiative is intended to remove a source of reluctance to try innovative approaches [March 1998, 7 pages including cover letter]. View or Print Directive .


Ground Water Issue Paper: Steam Injection for Soil and Aquifer Remediation (EPA 540-S-97-505). This issue paper was produced by the EPA Office of Research and Development. It contains detailed information on how steam injection can be used to recover organic contaminants from the subsurface, the contaminant and subsurface conditions for which the process may be appropriate, and general design and equipment considerations [January 1998, 16 pages]. Technology Evaluation Report: Phytoremediation (TE-98-01). This report, published by the Ground Water Remediation Technologies Analysis Center (GWRTAC) discusses five application types, including phytotransformation, rhizosphere bioremediation, phytostabilization, phytoextraction, and rhizofiltration. This detailed report discusses the current status of phytoremediation to treat soils and groundwater, including the science involved. Several field demonstration summaries are presented, with such information as: participants, compounds treated, site characteristics, results, and contacts. Innovative Site Remediation Technologies Design and Application: Liquid Extraction Technologies. This new edition, produced by the WASTECH Consortium, builds upon their earlier Phase I series and focuses on soil washing, soil flushing, and solvent/chemical extraction. This consensus-based engineering manual is written and reviewed by experts in the respective technology areas. A Dynamic Site Investigation: Adaptive Sampling and Analysis Program for Operable Unit 1 at Hanscom Air Force Base, Bedford, Massachusetts. This report was developed by the US EPA Region I - New England. It captures the results of the dynamic site investigation using field analytical instrumentation and methods to support a risk assessment study at Hanscom Air Force Base, Bedford, Massachusetts [January 1998, about 200 pages]. Ground Water Currents (EPA 542-R-98-004). Ground Water Currents is a newsletter that provides descriptions and performance data for developments in innovative ground water treatment. This issue highlights air sparging/high vacuum extraction to remove chlorinated solvents in ground water and soil and a 1,200-foot permeable reactive barrier in use at the Denver Federal Center [March 1998, 4 pages]. Exposure Factors Handbook, Volume I: General Factors (EPA-600-P-95/002Fa), Volume II: Food Ingestion Factors (EPA-600-P-95/002Fb), Volume III: Activity Factors (EPA-600-P-95/002Fc). These publications, produced by EPA's National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA), update the 1989 guidance that provided statistical data on the various factors used in assessing exposure. Accelerating Cleanup: Paths to Closure (DOE/EM-0342). This report was published by the Department of Energy Environmental Management program. This report provides a project-by-project estimate of the technical scope, costs, and schedules required to complete all 353 projects at DOE's remaining 53 cleanup sites in the United States [February 1998, 305 pages]. Advances in Innovative Groundwater Remediation Conference, May 6, San Francisco, CA. This one-day event, sponsored by the Ground Water Remediation Technologies Analysis Center (GWRTAC), will focus on recent developments in in situ remediation technologies that are being developed and applied in the United States. Topics include: natural attenuation, phytoremediation, bioremediation, treatment walls, remediation with surfactants/cosolvents, remediation of DNAPLs, remediation of metals, dynamic stripping/hydrous pyrolysis and hydrogen peroxide/catalyst remediation. Interstate Technology and Regulatory Cooperation Workgroup Conference, May 12-14, Arlington, VA. The ITRC is hosting a conference that will focus on current state activities to remove barriers to the use of innovative remediation and characterization technologies. The conference is open to all. Presentations and discussions will be made by the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as well as panel discussions on the use of ITRC Guidance Documents in the areas of: Metals Technology (Soil Washing), Permeable Barrier Walls, Low Temperature Thermal Desorption, and Natural Attenuation. ETV Washington Workshop, April 14, Washington, DC. The EPA's Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) program is hosting a workshop at the Omni Shoreham Hotel. This is an opportunity to learn about benefits and status of the ETV program and to provide EPA feedback on its implementation of the program. All attendees must register and space is limited.
