EPA Guidance

Clarification Regarding Use of SW-846 Methods, (Memorandum from the U.S. EPA Office of Solid Waste dated August 7, 1998). SW-846 contains the analytical and test methods that EPA has evaluated and found to be among those acceptable for testing under subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). In most situations, SW-846 functions as a guidance document setting forth acceptable, although not required, methods to be implemented by the user, as appropriate, in responding to RCRA-related sampling and analysis requirements. The memorandum sets forth the guidance as a clarification to SW-846 for reference and distribution to the States and to other interested parties, including laboratories and the regulated community [August 1998, 21 pages]. Technology Summary Report: In Situ Flushing (TI-98-01). This report was developed by the Ground Water Remediation Technologies Analysis Center (GWRTAC). GWRTAC continually compiles laboratory-, pilot-, and full-scale case study information for a variety of innovative in situ technologies for ground-water and soil remediation. This report provides a "snapshot" of the contents of GWRTAC's "living" database on in situ flushing case studies to provide the reader with basic information on activity in laboratory research, field demonstration, or full-scale application of this technology. A variety of tables, graphs, and interpretive text is presented to analyze the content of the GWRTAC database as of August 7, 1998. Cumulative Risk Assessment Guidance-Phase I Planning and Scoping (Memorandum and Guidance Document). The practice of risk assessment within the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is evolving away from a focus on the potential of a single pollutant in one environmental medium for causing cancer toward integrated assessments involving suites of pollutants in several media that may cause a variety of adverse effects on humans, plants, animals, or even effects on ecological systems and their processes and functions [July 1997, 14 pages]. Aerobic Cometabolic In Situ Bioremediation Technology Guidance Manual and Screening Software Users Guide. This document, prepared by the U.S. Air Force, provides information on the use of aerobic cometabolic in site bioremediation as a technology for the treatment of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons [June 1998, 82 pages]. Case Studies on Environmental Emergencies (Volume 4). This report was developed by the University of Virginia under cooperative agreement with the U.S. EPA. It contains 16 case studies based upon actual, significant chemical spills or incidents that occurred in the U.S. [August 1995, 257 pages]. Heads Up!! Small Business Innovation Research Grants. EPA plans to issue the 1999 SBIR Phase I solicitation on September 17, 1998. VOC Recovery Seminar, Cincinnati, OH, September 16-17. The U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the AICHE affiliated Center for Waste Reduction Technologies are sponsoring this seminar at the Vernon Manor Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio.
