EPA's Strategy for Enforcement of Regulatory Requirements Applicable to Underground Storage Tank (UST) Facilities (Memorandum and Strategy Paper). This memorandum and strategy were issued jointly by EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assistance and the Office of Underground Storage Tanks. Evaluation of Subsurface Engineered Barriers at Waste Sites (EPA 542-R-98-005). This report provides a national retrospective analysis of barrier field performance, as well as information that may be useful in developing guidance on the use and evaluation of barrier systems. Innovations in Site Characterization - Case Study: Hanscom Air Force Base (EPA 542-R-98-006). This case study was developed by the U.S. EPA Technology Innovation Office. This is a condensation of a much larger report titled, A Dynamic Investigation: Adaptive Sampling and Analysis Program for Operable Unit 1 at Hanscom Air Force Base, Bedford Massachusetts which can be viewed at http://www.clu-in.org/video/hanscom.htm. CONFERENCES AND SYMPOSIA

1998 Hazardous Waste Technology Exposition and Conference, San Diego, November 3-5. The Interstate Technology Regulatory Cooperation (ITRC) workgroup, a coalition of 26 states, is hosting a conference on state acceptance of innovative technologies. This conference will feature presentations and roundtable discussions regarding state information needs for technology consideration. The technology areas and topics that will be discussed include phytoremediation, in situ oxidation, in situ bioremediation, recirculating wells, UXO, DNAPLs, Radwaste, and pesticides. Companies that offer these technologies or deal with these contamination problems are invited to exhibit and participate in roundtable discussions with the state regulators. Advances in Innovative Groundwater Remediation, December 15, Atlanta, GA. The one day seminar will include presentations from practitioners involved in phytoremediation, treatment walls, in situ flushing, thermal stripping, in situ chemical oxidation, remediation of metals, and bioremediation. In Situ Thermal Processes Seminar, December 16, Atlanta, GA. This free event is sponsored by the U.S. EPA Technology Innovation Office and will be collocated at the Downtown Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel with the December 15 GWRTAC Groundwater seminar mentioned above. This one day seminar will focus on the fundamental principles, design considerations, limitations, and case studies for five in situ thermal processes. The technologies to be addressed include Dynamic Underground Stripping, Electrical Conductive Heating, Radio Frequency Heating, Six-Phase Electrical Heating, and In Situ Vitrification. SBIR Reminder! The EPA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program announced that its 1999 grant program solicitation is open from September 17 until November 19. They are seeking research proposals on advanced topics in science and engineering especially where the research may lead to technological innovation. I am trying to assemble real life scenarios of remediation system disruptions or failures that may occur as a result of Y2K. We are doing this as a public service to raise awareness of potential vulnerabilities in the hazardous waste cleanup community.
