Halogenated Monoaromatics

Physical barriers and pump and treat systems were utilized at the following sites. Chlorobenzene, 1,2-Dichlorobenzene, 1,3-Dichlorobenzene, 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene, and 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene, in addition to other contaminants, are present at these sites.

Example Sites

Eastland Woolen Mills, Corinna, Maine
U.S. EPA, Superfund Site Progress Profile.

The site includes the former Eastland Woolen Mill and the local areas contaminated by the release of hazardous substances from the Mill, which began operation in ~1909. The chlorobenzenes that were a major component of the wool-dyeing process are present in the site's soil and groundwater in both dissolved and DNAPL form. Treatment technologies chosen included ex situ thermal desorption of soil, pump and treat, and ISCO using sodium persulfate.

Sauget Area 2, Cahokia, East St. Louis, and Sauget, Illinois
U.S. EPA, Superfund Site Progress Profile.

The Sauget Area 2 site covers approximately 312 acres and is located in the floodplain bordering the eastern edge of the Mississippi River. Four landfills and four backfilled lagoons, all of which are at times in contact with the water table, are located throughout the property. Contaminants of concern include PCBs, chlorobenzenes, chlorophenols, chloroanilines, nitroanilines, and metals. An interim ROD provided for the construction of a bentonite slurry wall to prevent groundwater discharge to the river and a pump-and-treat system to maintain a negative gradient at the slurry wall.

Jadco Hughes Facility, Belmont, North Carolina
U.S. EPA, Superfund Site Progress Profile.

The 6-acre Jadco-Hughes Superfund Site was used as a solvent reclamation and waste storage facility. The contaminants of concern include numerous volatile and semivolatile organics, including various chlorobenzenes. SVE and groundwater pump and treat were chosen as the active treatment technologies.
