Express Cleaners, Salina, Kansas

Description
Historical activity that resulted in contamination.

Between 1985 and 1988 several public water supply (PWS) wells were tested and found to contain low levels of VOCs. Investigations led to the Express Cleaners site as a source for PCE contamination in the PWS wells. The drycleaning building has since been torn down and replaced by the Salina Regional Health Center. The construction of the new building was completed in conjuction with the installation of the remediation system.

Remediation Scenario

Cleanup Goals:
  Reduce PCE groundwater contamination to below EPA Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 5 µg/L. Reduce PCE soil contamination in accordance with KDHE Risk-Based Standards of 180 µg/kg.

Technologies

In Situ Soil Vapor Extraction
 

Why the technology was selected:
The technology was chosen based on cost and the geology. SVE systems work well in similar geology in Kansas.

Date implemented:
SVE wells installed in June 2001, system start-up in December 2001.

Final remediation design:
Five SVE wells to 25 ft with minimum 10 ft of screen. Rotron model DR454 blower. Four observation/radius of influence monitoring wells.

Results to date:
During installation six horizontal SVE wells were added underneath the new building's concrete basement. System was shut down in December 2007 and removed when asymptotic levels were reached. No significant rebound was seen in groundwater contamination at the site. A secondary source remains from the city sewer line in Santa Fe.

Next Steps:
Continue groundwater monitoring. Possible remediation around the secondary source.

Lessons Learned
