State Coalition for Remediation of Drycleaners Site Profiles

Former Gateway Cleaners, Florissant, Missouri

Description
Historical activity that resulted in contamination.

The site was previously occupied by Gateway Cleaners, a full service dry cleaning company from 1988 to 1998. The facility is located in a strip mall in a mixed commercial setting. Site is now Lamp and Lantern Village The contaminant source areas identified at the drycleaner include the soils beneath the concrete floor. There was minimal to moderate staining on the surrounding walls and floors from the past use of dry cleaning equipment.

Contaminants
Contaminants present and the highest amount detected in both soil and groundwater.

Contaminant Media Concentration (ppb) Nondetect
cis-1,2-Dichloroethene groundwater 260 ppb
cis-1,2-Dichloroethene soil 510 ppb
Tetrachloroethene (PCE) groundwater 200 ppb
Tetrachloroethene (PCE) soil 15,900,000 ppb
Trichloroethene (TCE) groundwater 80 ppb
Trichloroethene (TCE) soil 250 ppb

Technologies

In Situ Cap

Why the technology was selected:
CAP used to reduce exposure to groundwater contamination.

Date implemented:
12/8/2004

Final remediation design:
CAP used to restrict exposure to soil and groundwater PCE contamination and restriction on land use for non-residential purposes and restriction on groundwater use filed in Restrictive Covenant for site.

Other technologies used:
Restrictive Covenant restricting land use and groundwater use on the site.

Results to date:
Soil removal was completed. Restriction on land use for non-residential purposes and restriction on groundwater use filed in Restrictive Covenant for site. The site was given a certificate of completion on 12/14/2004.

Ex Situ Incineration

Date implemented:
12/8/2004

Final remediation design:
Soil removal was used to remove high levels of PCE in soil because of time issues.

Ex Situ Soil Removal

Why the technology was selected:
Site is redeveloped as strip mall. City utilities provides drinking water. Soil removal was used to remove high levels of PCE in soil because of time issues.

Date implemented:
12/8/2004

Final remediation design:
Soil removal was used to remove high levels of PCE in soil because of time issues.

Lessons Learned

1. Make sure the consultant is aware of the proper cleanup level for the applicable state program.
2. Drill deep wells at the start of site characterization.
