In Situ Thermal Treatment Site Profile Database

Description of Web Site

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI) is interested in providing federal and state project managers and other users with timely information about the developments in the field of in situ thermal (IST) treatment technologies. This website contains information about completed and on-going field demonstrations and bench- and full-scale in situ thermal treatment applications. As of December 2013, the website includes information on 181 IST treatment projects. Profiles include contaminants in soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediments. This website can be used as a networking tool (each profile lists a contact) to identify past solutions and lessons learned that would apply to new sites with similar contaminants and climate.

The IST treatment project profiles on the website describe the use of in situ thermal treatment technologies at specific sites. The profiles contain a summary of available information, including:

  • Site Information
    • Site name, location, and cleanup program
    • Entity responsible for cleanup
    • Site type
  • Project Information
    • Project status and scale
    • Site history and background
    • Project start and end dates
    • Contaminants treated
    • Media treated (type and quantity)
    • Site geology and hydrogeology
    • Residual management and monitoring
    • Performance and cost data
    • Lessons learned
  • Additional Information
    • Associated vendors or consultants
    • Points of contact
    • References

The in situ thermal treatment project profiles provide varying level of detail, depending on the data and information available.

Data Sources

EPA obtained data from technical journals, conference proceedings, and information provided by various technology vendors and site managers to prepare the profiles.

How to Search the Website

The website provides a search engine that allows a user to search the profiles by contaminants of concern, media type, project technology, project scale, project status, site type, site state, site country, or site name. A user may also select the button 'List All,' which presents a list of all available profiles. Search results are listed alphabetically by project name.

How to Provide Updates about an In Situ Thermal Treatment Project Profile or to Submit a New Profile

To provide updated information about an existing in situ thermal treatment project, please use the comment form or email Jim Cummings of EPA's Technology Assessment Branch at cummings.james@epa.gov.

To provide a new project profile, please contact Jim Cummings of EPA's Technology Assessment Branch at cummings.james@epa.gov or 202-566-0868.

Additional Resources

EPA resources that contain general information about IST treatment technologies are available in the Thermal Treatment: In Situ section of CLU-IN's Technology Focus.

Future Plans for the Website

EPA is preparing more profiles and links for more information on IST treatment projects as information becomes available.
