Federal Facilities Online Academy: Groundwater Policy Overview
Archived: Wednesday, November 13, 2024
Sponsored by: U.S. EPA Federal Facilities and Reuse Office (FFRRO)
Groundwater Policy and Federal Facilities Overview is a two-hour webinar course that provides an overview of U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) groundwater policies and guidance with emphasis on cleanups at federal facilities. By taking this course, participants will achieve the following objectives:
- Identify EPA groundwater policies;
- Understand groundwater classification and beneficial use in restoration objectives;
- Understand nature and extent considerations from groundwater contaminant plumes;
- Explore applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements (ARARs) commonly associated with groundwater remedies;
- Identify groundwater considerations for monitored natural attenuation (MNA), institutional controls, and technical impracticability waivers; and,
- Discover information on major groundwater policies from other federal agencies, such as Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Energy (DoE).

Dave is a groundwater scientist in the Science Policy Branch (SPB) of the Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI). Dave has been in OSRTI for 19 years. His focus in OSRTI has been in groundwater remediation, mainly technical impracticability waivers, monitored natural attenuation and groundwater remedy completion. Dave started his EPA career in the Corrective Action Program Branch. Before joining EPA, he worked at NIST and for a private environmental consulting firm focusing on mergers and acquisitions. Dave holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in earth sciences, focusing on soils, geochemistry, and hydrogeology.

Michael McCarroll is a physical scientist in EPA's Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation. He works as part of the groundwater team in the Science Policy Branch responding to technical inquiries and providing guidance on science policy. He has a M.S. in Applied Geoscience from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.S. in Environmental Science from Wilkes University.
Jill Branby, U.S. EPA Office of Land and Emergency Management (OLEM), Federal Facilities Restoration and Reuse Office (FFRRO) (branby.jill@epa.gov)
Lisa Raterink, U.S. EPA Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI), Science Policy Branch (raterink.lisa@epa.gov or (202)-566-1055)
Lisa Raterink is a Physical Scientist at the EPA in the Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI) in Washington, DC. Lisa has been working in OSRTI since 2020 and primarily works on groundwater topics related to remedy selection, MNA, and TI. Prior to working for EPA, she worked in the private sector conducting environmental site investigations and remediation. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology-Chemistry from Grand Valley State University and a Master's Degree in Geological Sciences from Wright State University.
Moderator:
