High-Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC)

High-resolution site characterization (HRSC) strategies and techniques use scale-appropriate measurement and sample density to define contaminant distributions, and the physical context in which they reside, with greater certainty, supporting faster and more effective site cleanup.

HRSC – New EPA Focus Area
HRSC is a new EPA focus area that reflects the state-of-the-science for environmental site characterization. The general concept and benefits of HRSC are being explained and communicated through a variety of EPA technical transfer mechanisms, including this new CLU-IN website. Learn more about HRSC.

EPA Develops Groundwater HRSC Training Course
As part of its focus on HRSC, EPA has developed a specialized training course for groundwater HRSC. The initial offering of this course debuted in August 2012 in Boston. View information on the course and potential future offerings.

HRSC Project Case Studies
HRSC best practices have been effectively applied in the characterization of contaminated media at sites nationwide. Projects have been completed for sites in the Superfund, Brownfields, RCRA, federal facilities and various state voluntary cleanup programs. View project case studies.
