In Situ Flushing Site Profiles

Description of Web Site

Site managers need site-specific data to select treatment approaches at contaminated sites. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI) has developed this website to summarize timely information about completed and ongoing applications of in situ flushing technologies. As of December 2013, the website included information on 56 profiles in situ flushing project profiles, both completed and on-going applications, at 15 sites (some sites involve more than one in situ flushing project).

The in situ flushing profiles provide a summary of available information, such as:

  • Site Information
    • Site name, location, and type
    • Site history and background
    • Cleanup program and responsible party
  • Project Information
    • Dates of the flushing project
    • Scale and status
    • Area, volume, and depth of treatment zone
    • Objective and cleanup goals
    • Technology type, including flushing agent and aboveground treatment
    • Technology design and description
    • Contaminants treated, including initial and final concentrations
    • Media treated, including geology and hydrogeology
    • Performance data
    • Cost information
    • Lessons learned
  • Additional information
    • Associated vendors or consultants
    • Points of contact
    • References

The profiles provide varying level of detail, depending on the data and information available for the specific application.

Data Sources

EPA obtained data from published reports, conference proceedings, and other published reference materials, based on information provided by site managers, regulatory officials, and technology providers to prepare the profiles.

How to Search the Website

The website provides a search engine that allows users to search the profiles by flushing technology or agent, site name or location, contaminants treated, media treated, scale, or status. Users may also select the button List All, which presents a list of all available profiles. Search results are listed alphabetically by site name.

How to Submit or Update an In Situ Flushing Project Profile

EPA encourages project managers, site owners, and technology vendors to add new in situ flushing project profiles. If information is not available for a specific data field, the field should be left blank. After EPA reviews the profile, it will be added to the website. Be sure to provide contact information, including name, telephone number, and e-mail address. Information about new projects must be published in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, or other published sources, including RODs or 5-year reviews, and the references must be provided on the profile submittal form. Unpublished data will not be accepted.

Future Plans for the Website

EPA is preparing more profiles and links for detailed information on in situ flushing projects and is seeking additional profiles on sites using in situ flushing technologies.
